Suggestions

I started to continue development because I wanted some extra functionality in Lazyest Gallery for myself.

Here is a list of things that I want to add in future versions:

  • make use of Wordpress multiple file upload feature
  • recursive random image from subfolders for empty folders (in 0.16.0)
  • Sorting and drop down folder hierarchy in List Folders Widget (in 0.16.0)
  • zip file upload
  • Folders and Images RSS feed
  • More EXIF data (in 0.16.0)
  • Watermark
  • Wordpress MU compatibility and functionality
  • Pretty Permalinks (in 0.16.0)
  • Search for Images
  • Moving images from one folder to another without losing captions and comments

More suggestions?

Would it be possible to add the prev next line not only at the bottom of the thumbnail page but also on top?

  2. #2 by Hein on 3 March 2010 - 12:35

The option for pretty permalinks works but somehow not when you choose to go the next page. It still says &lg_offset=17 for example in the url. Is this something to be incorporated into LG or is this something i can set via the control panel?

    • #3 by Marcel on 3 March 2010 - 13:31

this is part of the pagination. I don’t have a solution for this yet

  3. #4 by MikeC on 26 February 2010 - 19:32

Is it possible to show left/right arrows when a gallery image is viewed in lightbox to see other images in the current gallery?

  4. #6 by Chris on 25 February 2010 - 23:42

I forgot to mention. Something I’ve been requesting for a while are scrollbars on the popup if it is larger than the screen resolution. Some images in my gallery are hq scane that are often of a larger resolution than the screen. At the moment the popup is displayed off screen if it is too large, cropping the content. Does that make sense?
    Thanks

    • #7 by Lazyest Developer on 26 February 2010 - 11:34

I’ll send you a hack to enable scrollbars.

      • #8 by Chris on 27 February 2010 - 0:56

Oh, that would be great if you could.
Thanks very much. Do you need my email or can you view it here?.

  5. #9 by Chris on 24 February 2010 - 19:20

    Hey, loving 0.16.0, looks great.
A feature I would find useful is the ability to add album descriptions which would show below the album name. For example, you would have the folder called “My House” and below the description would be something like “Pictures I took of my old house in London”. That would be useful. Also, if it wasn’t too difficult, the ability to list sub folders below the parent folder in the directory view.
    Thanks.

LG runs smoothly on my site but i have a request concering adding pics to posts. When i add a new post you have the button LG IMAGE which you can use to add a thumbnail. Would it be possible for this function to automaticly check in the lg-gallery folders and present you with a list of folders in which you can select the image you want. Instead of manually adding the folder and file name etc..

    Hi,
Is it possible for certain gallery Folders only to appear on specific Pages that I choose?

I have four folders within my ‘Lazyest gallery’ and I want specific folders only to be visible on certain Pages. Eg. I dont want all four folders to appear on all the Pages where I have Lazyest gallery activated. (I have three pages where I have the Lazyest gallery).

I have been looking through the documentation and support. Hope you can help. Let me know if you require further info.

    Thank you.

    • #16 by Marcel on 15 February 2010 - 9:09

yes, use the [lg_folder] tag. See the Lazyest Gallery page, under Tips and Trick #5

  8. #17 by Andrew on 9 February 2010 - 17:41

Hey marcel, using the latest version again after updating, and I wondered – since I have “Use Folder Names” instead of their captions enabled, do the folder captions appear anywhere at all? I find I’m using it as a descriptive field but it isn’t actually appearing anywhere.

Also, where do the image descriptions appear? Or perhaps I’ve not updated properly! (this image should have one: http://aarmstrong.org/testing-gallery?file=Videogames/Beyond_Good_and_Evil_2/bgande2_1.jpg ). I am sure Wordpress’ auto update deletes the original files in the lazyest subgallery though – but if there is something I need to do to properly update then feel free to berate me for missing it (the readme doesn’t have much in on updating :) ).

Also, I would love it if you could add clear:left and clear:right into the code to fix images not properly being placed in left/right alignments since this seems like an odd thing to miss out – example here: http://aarmstrong.org/journal/2009/11/08/league-of-legends – see the 3rd image not going properly on the right hand side of the page?

It mainly needs clear:left or clear:right (line 331 and 333 of your latest beta’s frontend.php file), so it would be “float:left;clear:left;” and “float:right;clear:right;” respectively. I’m not using the beta, but it’s a similar place in lazyest-gallery.php in the most recent 15 version.

Just a quick suggestion though and one that makes it mainly easier for me to update – luckily it’s easily fixed by me locally, just an odd thing to have to keep doing every time I update! :D

    • #18 by Lazyest Developer on 9 February 2010 - 22:27

When you have checked “Use image captions instead of file names”, Captions should appear in the folder list and above the folder thumbs list.

Descriptions should appaer in the slide view.
Could be some bug there. I’ll check

      • #19 by Andrew on 10 February 2010 - 19:08

Ahhh, of course, I’m getting confused of course – there still isn’t as it were descriptions for folders. I’ll make sure to check slide view out for finding the descriptions too, let me get back to you on that.

  9. #20 by Hein on 25 January 2010 - 9:08

    Goodmorning!

I run the gallery on a wordpress installation which is installed on a synology ds109 on my home adsl connection. The gallery runs fast enough but somehow when i activate the random image widget in the sidebar it bogs down the speed of the whole site. Would it somehow be possible to correct that.. or is it something i can do myself?

    • #21 by developer on 25 January 2010 - 9:17

how many images do you have in your random image widget?

      • #22 by Hein on 25 January 2010 - 16:01

It is set to include all folders including subfolders. I think i have it solved now. I am using wp super cache to cache page for visitors in order to speed up the site for them. But wp super cache does not cache widgets. So i did some searching and found WP Widget Cache and this one does cache widget and thus also the output of the LG Random Image widget. Set it to something like 300 seconds solves my problem. Maybe this is something that can be incorporated into the gallery? The option to set a number of seconds for caching the picture in the random image widget?

  10. #23 by Adrian on 24 January 2010 - 12:34

Echoing a comment/request from an earlier poster.

I would love to see the ability to bulk rename images in a directory. For example:

    - images reside in /house/ directory
    - provide an option to rename images to /house/house01.jpg
    /house02.jpg
    /house03.jpg
    etc.

This would be a pretty awesome addition.

  11. #24 by David on 22 January 2010 - 23:16

    Nice plugin!
I’d like a possibility to remove exif-data when uploading images.

    • #25 by developer on 22 January 2010 - 23:32

removing exif-data is not a feature that is not going to be build into Lazyest Gallery. Please use an image editor.

  12. #26 by Mike on 22 January 2010 - 22:12

Hello, is it possible to rename the folder?

    • #27 by marcel on 22 January 2010 - 22:15

Hi Mike, It’s not possible to rename the folder form WordPress admin. You can edit the caption though.
We’ll put this functionality is a future release.

  13. #28 by Jen on 16 January 2010 - 23:43

Any idea when you will have the pretty permalinks available? I see it on the To do list. :)

    • #29 by Marcel on 17 January 2010 - 20:47

Jen,Very soon, I hope within a week or two. This week I’ll release a beta version.

  14. #30 by Matthias on 26 December 2009 - 14:11

Great gallery plugin. Still experimenting with it. Would be great for the folder view [lgfolder folder=...] not only to give the “count” as a parameter, but also start and end picture number. That way, it would be possible to use different pics of one folder/album in different paragraphs of one posts. Such as when writing a holiday blog from Greece e.g….

  15. #31 by Hein on 26 December 2009 - 9:14

Just a small question (i hope). When i login to the admin part of my site i would like to open the LG page under Media and then press a button which says “Reindex” or something like that. What it does is reindex the lg-gallery folder and produces thumbs for newly added folders.

    Would that be possible?

    • #32 by Marcel on 26 December 2009 - 11:12

folders are being (re)indexed automatically when opened

      • #33 by Hein on 25 January 2010 - 9:12

        Great. Thanks for clearifying that.

  16. #34 by Brian on 14 December 2009 - 17:05

I added a quick sorting method to lazyest-folders.php
    /**
    * lg_sort_folders_cmp()
    *
    */
    function lg_sort_folders_cmp($a, $b)
    {
    return strcmp($a["curdir"], $b["curdir"]);
    }

and then in lg_list_folders I added a line to call it:
    $folders = lg_get_folders(“”, TRUE, FALSE);
    usort($folders, “lg_sort_folders_cmp”);

Quick and easy way to sort alphabetically, and because of the way curdir is setup, it sorts the sub folders automatically, because they all start with the same directory structure.

    Shows quite nicely at: http://techhouse.us/wordpress-mu/brianw/gallery/

    • #35 by Marcel on 14 December 2009 - 21:35

      Hi Brian,
Thanks for the code. That would be great for those who want to sort their folders alphabetically in the list folders widget.

  17. #36 by Marc on 31 October 2009 - 15:59

    Hi,

First of all thanks for your plug-in.
I’m using it to display a random image on my sidebar. But I need 2 different features that can very likely be achieved with a code modification :

    - How to make the full size picture open in a new window when a thumbnail is clicked. Equivalent of the target=”_blank” in html coding
    - How to make a thumbnail unclickable. Suppose I just want to display a random thumbnail ant that’s it.

Maybe you can tell me where to go in the code to achieve that.

    Thanks a million.

  18. #37 by Chris on 8 October 2009 - 23:14

Hey, I’m sure this had been suggested, but I can’t find it.
I would really like to see a widget that displays the most recently uploaded images.
    Thanks.

  19. #38 by Andrew on 21 September 2009 - 12:16

Oh, another quick thing, I’ve found a bug (or intended feature?) where “float: right” (or left) styled images seem to break if placed one immediately above each other. Adding clear: right, or clear: left fixes it.

My example was this post I edited: http://aarmstrong.org/journal/2009/07/08/the-truman-show (the images started stepping out before I added it – if you download the page and remove the extra clear: right from any of the pictures you’ll see what I mean). I just edited the lines that create the “float: right/left” option. :)

A minor thing but it just occurred to me.

  20. #39 by Andrew on 21 September 2009 - 12:05

I mean, you can’t have “Random image from folder” AND “Folder icon” options selected (my suggestion is if “Folder Icon” is selected, optionally if no folder icon exists, show a random, or the first image). :)

  21. #40 by Andrew on 20 September 2009 - 17:49

Oh, also, I do realise you’re too busy from other post that you’re not updating this ATM ;) Frankly, I’m just suggesting things for the hell of it, I don’t actually expect any of them to be implemented, just that there is someone who could use them :D

  22. #41 by Andrew on 20 September 2009 - 17:47

Hey, I’m now using the gallery :) well, slowly adding captions and so forth in any case. Here are a few suggestions for maybe-future releases. I might hack these in myself if I have the time, but I don’t right now (I’ve got 3000 images to add captions to!).

    - An option to have a “name” for a file instead of a single caption field would be great. Even just a tag inside the caption to split the “name” and the “description” would be great (like the more tag perhaps).

    - Possibly it’d be wise to not create a “slide/IMAGE_NAME” file if the original is equal or smaller then the sizes in the options anyway (would save duplication/recompression).

    - lg_image option – the width and height seem pointless with thumbnail caching on since it just stretches the smaller thumbnail. It’d be great to have at least an option to have the “fullsize” or “slide” used instead of the thumbnail in the lg_image options, or even better, if a custom size is created, that a custom thumbnail (perhaps “imagename_xxx_yyy.ext”) is created for it if caching is on.

    - Option to use a random thumbnail as a galleries picture if the “gallery_name.jpg” etc. files don’t exist. This just saves time, for me, since I want some with specific thumbnails and others I don’t care about.

    - The gallery looks a little odd with cropping of thumbnails off (which I prefer the look of) since height isn’t taken into account – ie; it says “make it 150 wide” not “make it 150 wide, or 150 heigh if it’ll be higher then wider”.

You’ve pretty much got all the other things – pretty permalinks, search, better upload feature). I even worked out the problem deleting folders – nobody/nobody with odd permissions is odd, plus I think your own plugin doesn’t delete things correctly (ie; tries to delete a folder when it isn’t empty), although I checked your code and it appears logically correct. Odd that :?

In any case thanks for making this plugin :D

    • #42 by marcel on 21 September 2009 - 9:00

random images is already a stabdard feature of lazyest gallery

  23. #43 by Ace on 4 September 2009 - 2:48

I’ve had a few suggestions on the other page.

One of them being pagination on the page that lists all galleries.

I’d also like a widget that displays X amount of galleries in a list, and can be sorted by recently added, name, etc.

    Searchable images/galleries. Searchable tags/captions/titles/filenames.

    Ratings of images and/or galleries.

  24. #44 by Chris on 28 August 2009 - 3:08

In some cases the images I upload are larger than my screen. Lazyest gallery currently shows them in a popup but some of the image cannot be seen as it is too large. Is there a way to add a scroll-bar to the image popup if the image is larger than the screen resolution?.

  25. #45 by homer on 20 August 2009 - 3:00

I’d love to see an option to make a slideshow the page background.

    • #46 by homer on 20 August 2009 - 3:38

      While I’ve got your attention…

I’ve been trying to center and enlarge the slideshow on the front page of osbnorcia.org. There seems to be conflicting styles to do this, and firebug says that I need to edit an element.style. I’m lost! Any ideas?

      • #47 by marcel on 20 August 2009 - 8:45

The javascript for the slideshow is on the list to be updated. The left alignment is hardcoded in the script.

  26. #48 by cputoaster on 7 August 2009 - 9:24

And password protection of individual folders in a gallery would be nice too. I know that you could create a wp page for every folder and secure them with the wp mechanism, but it kind of defeats the lazyness factor ;-)

  27. #49 by cputoaster on 7 August 2009 - 8:57

Parallel processing for thumb / slide generation would be nice. My 4(8) cores in the server would accelerate the first visit to the page considerably…

  28. #50 by costas on 31 July 2009 - 20:08

    Hello Marcel,
how about a photo ranking by logged in users to help you find the “best” lets say photo in an album and sort them accordingly or something.

    Cheers,
    Costas

  29. #52 by Chris on 30 July 2009 - 1:07

What I would really like to see is the ability to add a folder description for each folder. Shouldn’t be too hard to do?
    Thanks.

    • #53 by marcel on 30 July 2009 - 8:21

Errr, other than the description that is already possible?

      • #54 by Chris on 1 August 2009 - 0:16

        For real? Where’s that?
I read in the readme: “Manage folders, captions, descriptions by the plugin Manage page which is located under Manage -> Lazyest Gallery” so I guessed there would be descriptions but I don’t know where to add them. All I see is captions.

        • #55 by marcel on 3 August 2009 - 8:19

I see, you want captions AND descriptions.
Sorry, descriptions are not in lazyest gallery

          • #56 by Chris on 3 August 2009 - 13:54

            Yeah, it would be useful.
From what I gather the name and caption cannot be shown together in directory view, only in thumbnail view.
If I have a folder called “My House” then it would be useful to show below that a description, “Pictures of my house in London”.
Captions are useful but I’d rather users could see a description before actually having to enter the folder.
            Thanks

  30. #57 by Russell on 27 July 2009 - 16:24

I like the plugin but found the instructions a little incomplete.
One feature I need but cannot see how to create is the ability to either embed links into the images or into the caption. I tried using div brackets but they just defaulted to “[ ]” on save.

    • #58 by marcel on 28 July 2009 - 8:51

Hi Russel. This is by design. Embed links by inserting square brackets “[]“. They will be converted to “<&gt’” on the gallery page.

  31. #59 by Paolo - wWw.pXeL.Tk on 14 July 2009 - 12:50

After create and delete a folder in my album (www.linuxfm.org – Linux Users Group Site), lazyest-gallery has deleted all photos irremediably!! :-( :-( :-(

    • #60 by marcel on 28 July 2009 - 8:53

err isn’t this what is supposed to happen when you delete a folder?

  32. #61 by Hermann on 14 May 2009 - 15:33

How do you sort images by exif data? I have uploaded a gallery with my ftp program and now sort order is scrambled… also you should try to improve the subsampling quality for thumbnails, although using 100% and 220×200 they seem poor quality.
Anyhow this is the only plugin I have found to do exactly what I need!
    Thanks!

    • #62 by Marcel on 15 May 2009 - 20:06

      Hi Hermann,
Goord idea, exif data is one of the parts I havent touched sofar.

      • #63 by hermann on 18 May 2009 - 12:20

About the subsampling I was wrong, i was just looking at zoomed web page

  33. #64 by Teri Solow on 6 May 2009 - 21:46

A nice addition would be to add the option “Show slide in Lightbox” under Thumbnail View Options. That way the lightbox slideshow can appear at a uniform/reasonable width if the fullsize images are wider than many people’s displays :)

  34. #65 by Twitter Backgrounds on 1 May 2009 - 6:29

-I would suggest an option in admin panel that will link a galery with gateries, l mean when u select a gallery in admin panel, u should link it with any category and when u open posts in that gallery, linked gallery images may come with horizontal wiew, displaying images in sidebar is not always pretty but the think l said may be smart.
-When u display a single picture in any fallery related pictures may come up
-bulk rename or bulk Captioning option for renaming images with a number would be fine, l mean in the option of gallery , bult rename:
    uploaded images are these ones:
    011101.jpg
    011102.jpg
    011103.jpg
    011104.jpg
    when u click bulk rename:
names of files would be like this:
    desiredfilename-011101.jpg
    desiredfilename-011102.jpg
    desiredfilename-011103.jpg
    desiredfilename-011104.jpg

I am not a coder, so l cant know if my wishes may be possible :)
great plugin i loved and using in my default wp plugins..

    • #66 by Twitter Backgrounds on 7 May 2009 - 13:03

I found softwares to bultrename file names of images like bulk rename utility, but the other requests are important.
showing any folders as category in related categories of blog.
a code for template for single.php page as horizontal.

  35. #67 by rizaldy on 8 April 2009 - 6:28

hai thanks for the quick reply marcel :D

yes i’m aware of that function, I wasn’t clear in my first post sorry for that, what i’m really after is
to be able to put [ lg_galery ] functionality in my homepage, so i can show my top folder cover image in my homepage just like [lg_gallery] did for page.

i try to query_posts my gallery page, in my homepage, but when i click the top folder image, it didn’t link to my gallery page, instead it start to navigate around folder in my homepage *sorry if this is a bit confusing, english is not my first laguage, i hope you understand what i mean :D *

so i dive around and found lg_show_dirs() function then i change the $gallery_uri (lazyest-dirs.php line 10) value to get_option( ‘ lg_gallery_prev ‘ ) and that make the folder link to my gallery page :D

sorry if i type to much, but i feel this is a good addition for your next release to be able to show top folder image just for show off in homepage :D , and marcel this lazyest plugin is a savior for lazy people like me, keep up the good work man !!

  36. #68 by rizaldy on 6 April 2009 - 15:15

maybe a template tag for displaying a folder list not just using shortcode, bcoz sometime i’ll love to dive to my theme core to embed a thing or two

    • #69 by marcel on 7 April 2009 - 11:31

a folder list tag is already available
      <?php if (function_exists(lg_list_folders)) lg_list_folders("title"); ?>

  37. #70 by Teri Solow on 9 March 2009 - 15:59

Another thing, probably more important than the rest:

When someone comments on an image, the notification email I receive makes no note of WHICH image. Since I have a few thousand images in my gallery, it gets rather hard to figure out where the comment was made by context. The comment notification should, instead of linking to the main gallery page, link to the specific node that was commented on.

    • #71 by Teri Solow on 9 March 2009 - 16:00

Of course, this was supposed to be a reply to my previous comment. Not trying to say that this is more important than other people’s suggestions.

  38. #73 by Sunshine on 7 March 2009 - 5:04

The ability to show random images in the sidebar horizontally instead of just vertically with the ability to choose the number of rows and columns to show.

    • #74 by marcel on 7 March 2009 - 6:57

Show random images sideways by adding
      #lazyest_sidebox p { display:inline; )
      to your stylesheet.

  39. #75 by Teri Solow on 2 March 2009 - 8:29

Some suggestions that haven’t been mentioned yet:

    1. A way to list new files for a given time period, say, the current day; in case I want to make a blog post listing new things I’ve uploaded that day.

    2. An option to only show exif data if it is present. I have many images that are scanned, or that are created by me in the GIMP. It’s not useful to me to show exif data for those images, but I would like it to be visible for pictures I have taken with my digital camera.

    3. When adding new images to a folder that already has manual sorting, the new images seem to randomly/haphazardly appear amidst the pre-existing images. It would be nice if they would go straight to the bottom instead.

  40. #76 by Ava Ganache on 9 February 2009 - 18:37

    - I’d like to be able to select a specific thumbnail to use for a particular folder, rather than selecting a random image.
    - I’d like to be able to specify the slideshow crossfade time as a parameter to the [lg_slideshow...] shortcode

    • #77 by Marcel on 9 February 2009 - 20:40

      Ava,
If you want a specific thumbnail for your folder, just create a picture with the same name as your folder e.g.
      folder = “flowers”
      picture = “flowers.jpg

and select “Folder Icon” in the Thumbnail View Options

I’m working on more options for the slideshow.

  41. #78 by gaz on 22 January 2009 - 21:05

Will you ever support videos? It’s one of the few plugins I’ve found that handle subfolders. It would be great if videos would be included. Thanks.

I’ll think about tags and/or search later.

  44. #83 by realsol on 27 October 2008 - 22:55

What do you think of the tags? Also, do you know of a way to search the description? It would be nice to offer a search for images. If you don’t have tags, at least a search for the description would work well. Users could search, ‘San Francisco + Chris’ to return all pics of Chris in San Francisco.

Good idea for the upload path.
I’m thinking about an install wizard.

    Hey Scott,
Actually, Somebody already made a random slideshow plugin for Lazyest Gallery in the past.
I’ll see if I can revive that.
Or I’ll wait until you get bored and send the code to you ;-)

    Hey Marcel,

Actually – something else I would like to see… an AJAX thumbnail slideshow widget that shows either random pics from all galleries, random pics from one gallery or sequence through one album.

If I get bored I may take a stab at it. ;)

    Cheers
    Scott

It would be nice to see some sort of tagging that could be integrated into the WordPress tags. I am using SensitiveTagCloud which allows me to drill down tags for posts. I know nextGEN is adding this into their release. It would be nice to see it here.

Also, I would love to see it support the upload file directory that is used for Wordpress MU blog, rather than the full path. Most users have no idea what the full path is since their ftp access only is to their own blog directory, they never see the path.

Otherwise, nice little plug-in. I have been using nextGEN. Great Plugin but just too much of a pain to setup galleries and stuff with. I am tired of having to explain to my users how to use the darn thing. This is just straight forward.

I whished my spare time was growing as fast as the suggetsion list ;-)

Oh, and is there a way to add watermarks to pictures? Didn’t find it yet and it would also be a nice feature.

  51. #90 by Autoblogger on 10 October 2008 - 15:12

The multiple file-upload would be great! Same is the possibility of a zipfile upload.

And another suggestion: it should be possible to use the name of the folder or file in the title-metatag of the html-header. Good for SEO ;)

    Hi Dan,
I haven’t looked at the exif data yet. I’ll see what’s possible.

Camera exif data. Model, exposure, ISO etc.

    Hey Scott,
Good idea. Now for some time to do it all…

    Hey Marcel,

Thought of something else that should be on the TODO list… An albums / photos RSS feed.

    Cheers,
    Scott

    @Scott, IC okidoki.
List Folders Widget needs sorting too.

  57. #96 by Scott on 30 September 2008 - 15:04

Sorry – not [lg_list_folders] shortcode – I mean LG List Folders widget. It would be nice to have a folder depth parameter for that as per above.

  58. #97 by marcel on 30 September 2008 - 11:40

    @Scott,
Adapting the Admin pages to other parts of WP Admin is on my list, but I have to admit it’s on a very low spot. Especially because Wordpress has the habit of changing the admin lay out quite often.

I don’t know a [lg_list_folders] shortcode. The [lg_folder] shortcode only shows the folder content, without sub folders.

Your remark about tab stops makes sence. It’s not too difficult to implement, perhaps it can make it into version 0.11.1.6

  59. #98 by Scott on 30 September 2008 - 10:21

    Hey Marcel,

    Some enhancement requests for you…

    - Checkboxes on LG Settings page – click on text should toggle check box. Other parts of WordPress UI do this. Other things like edit fields, etc. dont quite match other parts of WP Admin. Maybe some effort should be taken into getting the admin css classes lining up more with WP ones?

    - In the “Manage Folder” page – while editing captions – do you know if there is an easy way to avoid tab stops on the Delete button & thumbnail links? What I would like is a really quick way to enter all the captions in. I want to type in a caption for an image, hit tab (once – not 3 times!) – then start typing the next caption. If it’s hard / ugly to do – I wouldn’t worry abou it.

    - the [lg_list_folders] shortcode – would be nice to have a parameter for that to set depth restriction (e.g.: show only first level depth of folders, not the whole hierarchy).
